Robert was Viceroy of India between 1876 and1880. The Delhi Durbar of 1877 was held beginning on 1st January to proclaim Queen Victoria as Empress of India. Upon resignation in 1880 he was made an Earl by Benjamin Disraeli. He was appointed British Ambassador in Paris in 1887 despite showing signs of being weakened by heart disease. He was clearly respected in Paris as he was given, unusually, a state Funeral in France. His wife was the chief mourner accompanied by ministers of state and French government ministers and 3,500 soldiers served at the funeral. His body was returned to England by rail
