Baptised at St Mary-le-Tower, Ipswich, 30th of June 1825. Educated at Charterhouse where he played cricket for the 1st XI 1842/3/4. He went on to Trinity College, Cambridge arriving 7th June 1844. He graduated BA in 1848 and MA in 1854.
He was ordained Deacon in 1849 and Priest 1850. His first parish was Yaxley 1851 to 1861. It is uncertain where he was in between but he was at Holy Trinity, Folkestone from 1869 to 1873. Later that year he has a short spell at St James's, Dover followed by another at Herne Bay,1874/5. Later we find him in charge of St Saviour's Church on the corner of Park Crescent and Dry Hill Park Road. In the family this was often referred to as the Tin Tabernacle!
