Freda was a VAD (Volunteer Aid Detachment) nurse and ambulance driver at Ampton Hall Temporary Hospital in West Suffolk having originally volunteered at Melton Red Cross Hospital in Woodbridge. She was given a special pass which allowed her to be called out at night. She was one of seven children (six girls and one boy) and records show that she served a total of 4224 hours between 24th July 1916 and 11th June 1917. She married in late 1918.
