#15036, Samuel GURNEY

Samuel married and had a daughter Catherine

On John Gurney's death in 1809, his son Samuel (#15036) assumed control of Gurney's Bank in Norwich.  About the same time he also took over control of the London bill broking business of Richardson, Overend & Company, whose title was subsequently changed to Overend, Gurney & Company.  It went on to become the world's largest discounting house for 40 years until it failed - ten years after Samuel's death - in 1866 with liabilities of 11 million pounds sterling.  The failure of Overend, Gurney & Company ruined a number of Gurneys, as well as numerous investors.  Gurney's Bank in Norwich, however, escaped significant damage to business and reputation from the collapse of the London billbroking business.
