Known as John of Earlham, to distinguish him from his brothers, Richard of Keswick & Northrepps and Joseph of The Grove. John Gurney was known not only as banker and a member of the prominent Norfolk family but also as father of Social reformers Elizabeth Fry and Joseph John Gurney, writer Louisa Hoare and Samuel Gurney, another banker.
His father was John Gurney of Keswick (08/03/1716 - 22/04/1770) his grandfather was Joseph Gurney of Keswick and his great grandfather was John Gurney of Norwich.
In the 19th century the Gurney family was known for its wealth: In Gilbert and Sullivan's 1875 comic opera "Trial by Jury", a character describes his accumulation of wealth until at length I became as rich as the Gurneys.
Their home, Earlam Hall was rented from the Bacon family.
