William was a member of the Madras Legislative Council from 1861 to 1864 and 1866-1870. His company was Arbuthnot & Co. He was Chairman of the Bank of Madras; Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce of Madras; MLC Director, Commercial Union Insurance Co and of Midland Bank Ltd.
Lived at Plawhatch, East Grinstead, Sussex.
His son, Major Kenneth Wyndham Arbuthnot (1873-1915) was educated at Bath College and RMA Sandhurst. He was commissioned 2nd Lt. in the Seaforth Highlanders 1893; Lt. 1895; Capt. 1900; Brevet-Major 1902; Major 1909. He rose to be Brigade-Major, Gordon Infantry Brigade (Scottish Command) 1911.
He re-joined his regiment on the out break of war and was killed in action during the 2nd Battle of Ypres 25th April 1915.
