Purchased Elderslie Lodge in the parish of Ockley in 1824 from Captain Sykes of the R.A. for £9,000. George's parents were Robert Arbuthnot (1728-1803) and Mary Urquhart who died in 1818.
The Arbuthnots were landowners and merchants of the Haddo-Rattray estate, Aberdeenshire, Scotland for the previous two generations, and were formerly of Peterhead in that county. George Arbuthnot worked for 22 years (1800-1823) as a merchant in Madras, and was a magistrate before returning to England and acquiring Elderslie. He lived at Upper Wimpole Street in winter.
