John was a six-year-old when he was shipwrecked. After schooling at Marlborough he went to work for Mc Connell & Co, cotton spinners in Manchester and then for Fine Cotton Spinners & Boublers Co where he managed the Adelphi and Clarence Mills at Bollington in Cheshire. At that time they owned 60 mills, employed 30,000 operatives and were listed in the FT 30, as one of the 30 biggest companies in the country.
