Hubert entered the Royal Naval College, Osborne as a cadet in 1910. In World War I he served on HMS Albermarle and later on HMS Malaya at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. He also undertook anti-gun running duties during the Irish Civil War. 1918 saw him serving in submarine duties off the coast of the Netherlands.
He remained in the Royal Navy during the Second World War, notably witnessing the sinking of HMS Royal Oak at Scapa Flow in October 1939. After active service he became a coffee planter in Kenya, where he was a partner in McMaster Donyo Sabuk Orchards. They laid out a memorable 9-hole golf course in the 1930s on land that had once been owned by the eccentric settler, Sir William Northrup MacMillan in about 1901. His grave site is located near the summit of Ol Donyo Sabuk Hill now part of a popular National Park.
Hubert retired to Winchester in Hampshire.
