Commissioned into 1st Life Guards and a Captain in the Royal North Devon Yeomanry.
He inherited an estate which although still large was burdened by heavy mortgages. He farmed and worked in the financial sector before marrying the daughter of a rich banker, Wentworth Blackett Beaumont, 1st Baron Allendale. The money she brought him seems to have been invested in extending and modernising both Poltimore House and Court Hall which turned out to be a mistake. The approach of World War 1 requiring an emphasis on food production and two sets of death duties within 10 years dealt a cruel blow.
