#3710, Neville Stephen LYTTON OBE 3rd Earl of Lytton

Born 06 Feb 1879 in Calcutta, India
Died 09 Feb 1951 in Paris, France
Occupation Commissioned Army Officer, Olympian and Artist.
Education Eton and Ecole des Beaux-Arts
Father Edward Robert BULWER LYTTON (1831 - 1891)
Mother Edith VILLIERS (15 Sep 1841 - 17 Sep 1936)

During World War 1 Neville Lytton served as an officer on the Western Front and saw duty on the Somme and at Amiens.  He was seen as a 'gentleman of the old school'  who served with gallantry and distinction.  Before the war he played minor counties cricket for Hertfordshire making five appearances between 1896 and 1898.  In 1908 he competed in the Summer Olympics winning a bronze medal in the real tennis competition.

It seems that before, during and after World War 1 art was his continuing interest.  Indeed some of his art is thought to have travelled with him during the war and afterwards examples were acquired  by both the Imperial War Museum and by Musee de Guerre.  Famously, his frescoes reflecting his war time experiences adorn the walls of Balcombe village's Victory Hall.

Following his elder brother's death in 1947, without surviving male issue, Neville succeeded his brother as the 3rd Earl Lytton.
