Evelyn married her cousin. They were married by the Rev.R H Hadden, Vicar of the parish and Honorary Chaplain to the King. Ivry Freyberg says that Evelyn was very religious, and that she stayed at The Rookery as a child and has the happiest memories. Pilbeam was the chauffeur and a large staff included maids who wore pretty little hats and green dresses with coffee coloured aprons. In the hall there were first edition sets of Hans Andersen and Edward Lear which she just loved. The children were expected to wear morning clothes in the morning and change into afternoon clothes after lunch. Either side of the front door were large fragrant Heliotropes and cattle grazed in the fields.
