Valerian was educated at Eton (Evans) and graduated with honours from Camberwell College of Arts in 1994. He succeeded to the title on 2nd May 1993. He was elected as a cross bencher to the House of Lords by his fellow hereditary peers under the House of Lords Act in 1999, being the youngest hereditary peer at the time and making his maiden speech on war widows' pensions. He graduated MA from the Slade School of Art in 2006. He was a member of the House of Lords Works of Art Committee from 1999 to 2002 and and was a member of the Library & Computers sub-committee from 1995-1998. He was also a member of the Design Council in 2001.
Valerian, who is said to love bees and painting is married to Dr. Harriet Rachel Atkinson, daughter of John Richard Evelyn Atkinson and Jane Chaytor. They have three children whose names are deliberately withheld.
