The 1871 census shows Charles at Rossall College, Fylde, Lancashire. In January 1880 he was proposed for Fellowship of the Geological Society of London to which he was elected the following month. On his proposal form he described himself as a Mining Engineer living in San Valentino, Abruzzi, Italy, and in answer to the question as to what qualified him for fellowship he claimed an intimate acquaintance with the geology of the coal fields of the North of England and of the rocks of Central Italy. 1891 census shows Charles and Edith with their son at Rosehill House, Keresforth Rd Dodworth, West Yorkshire and this is the address given on 2 patent applications of 1889 & 1897. Rosehill House was unoccupied at the 1901 census and his and his son's whereabouts at that time are unknown. Telephone directory entries in 1904/5 and 1912 show him as an Estate Agent in Needle Wood, Barnsley (this was his son's address), but it is known that he had also been a member of the Mining Institute. At time of death was at Manor House, Scaftworth Bawtry, Yorkshire.
