Robert was named 'Russell' after his father's friend and fellow missionary, William Armstrong Russell who subsequently became Bishop Russell. Born in Ningpo while his parents were missionaries there, Robert was educated at Repton and Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge (1872). He was Vicar of Earls Barton from 1883 to 1903 and Rector of Hitcham, Suffolk from 1903 until his death in 1925. Rev. Cobbold had carried out his duties on the Thursday and on the Friday complained of having a heavy cold. An ambulance was called to take him to hospital where his condition worsened and he died in his sleep. Two of his three sons were killed in WWI and both are remembered in the Memorial Hall at Marlborough College.
