William was ordained deacon (Peterborough) in 1851 and priest 1852. He was curate at St. Nicholas, Leicester 1851-52 and curate of North Runcton, Norfolk 1852-61 before becoming rector there, Hardwick and Setchy included 1861-92. On 6th September 1852 he married Anna Maria Boileau (born 11/08/1826 in Tunbridge Wells, died 21/11/1897 in King's Lynn), known as Aunt Amy, the daughter of Sir John Peter Boileau Bt. and Lady Catherine Sarah Elliot) in Ketteringham, Norfolk.
William and Anna had nine children: Mortimer Hay Gurney 1855-1925; Gerard Boileau Gurney 1856-1903; Arthur Elliott Gurney 1858-1864; Harriet Eva Louisa Gurney 1859-1942;Geoffrey Kerville Gurney 1860-1869; Winifred Henrietta Catherine Gurney 1863-1931; Anselmo Gurney 1865-1916; Kathleen Laura Alicia Gurney 1866-1935 and Richenda Agnes Pauline Gurney 1869-1941.
The Rev William Hay Gurney is buried at All Saints' Church, N Runcorn.
