John was educated at Rugby and St. John's College, Cambridge, admitted 4th April 1856. He was further admitted 'cum causa' at Oxford on 4th June 1863 and ordained deacon in 1863 and priest (Ely) 1864. It seems he went back to Cambridge for his BA in 1869 (4th Wrangler). He was Rector of Fulbourne, Cambridgeshire from 1868 to 1917.
