David was educated at Rugby and St. John's College, Cambridge, admitted 10th March 1853. He was further admitted to the Inner Temple on 7th March 1857 and called to the Bar on 27th January 1862.
In 1881 he was living at 2 Paper Buildings, Inner Temple. He was living at 2 Temple Gardens, London at the time of his death.
