Douglas contracted TB in childhood. TB spread from his lungs to his left hip causing the problem known as 'Tubercular Hip'. This disease led to a shortening of his left leg and a family photograph as a schoolboy shows him on crutches. Later pictures show him with specially made footwear on his left foot. The TB bug spread to his brain causing meningitis shown as the first cause of death on his Death Certificate. He learned a trade as a cobbler before he died.
