Arthur's first gardening job of note was at Bourne Park in Kent. He later took up positions at Syon House in Middlesex, at Ingestre and at Hooton Hall in Cheshire. Subsequently he became Curator of the Charles Darrah collection of cacti / succulents at Alexandra Park, Manchester which in his time (1890s to early 1930s) was deemed second only to Kew in its importance. Sadly the collection was bombed by suffragettes in 1913. Arthur retired in 1934.
