Elizabeth, who grew to be an elegant and beautiful woman was offered a place at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford in 1939 to read English but was persuaded by her mother to defer entry until the following year in the belief that the war would be over by the spring of 1940. She was a fluent French speaker and in 1939 was offered a job at Bletchley Park by Christopher Hill, the Balliol don who was later outed as a communist spy. She thought him charming! For reasons as yet unknown she was again persuaded from taking up the offer.
