#984, William Johnston (Tony) KESWICK

Known as Tony. They lived at Theydon Priory, Theydon Bois, Essex and at Glenkiln Shawhead, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. The Times, 27/10/2017 in an article about his son Chips' chairmanship of Arsenal FC said that he (Tony) had helped organise the Special Operations Executive for Sir Winston Churchill, was involved in the Normandy landings and subsequently worked for the Royal Family. His (Chips') grandfather and great-grandfather served the country as MPs.

He arrived back in the Far East in 1926.  He and his brother remained directors of the firm after they had left the Far East.  Tony was in charge of the Shanghai office (at that time the Head Office in the Far East) from 1935 unrtil 1941.  He was also chairman of the Shanghai Municipal Council during the crises leading to the Pacific War, and survived a murder attempt by the Japanese in Shanghai.  During the Pacific War he served as head of the China Theatre of the Special Operations Executive, Britain's wartime secret service.
