1861 census has him on board Britannia as a naval cadet in Portsmouth Harbour. In 1869 he is the proprietor of the Waikato Times, NZ & Bay of Plenty Times, New Zealand. In 1870 he is an Ensign in NZ Militia in Wellington. Between 1875 and 1876 he is living on the East Coast, Hawke's Bay; Bay of Plenty. The July 1890 edition of Bay of Plenty Times he is said to have sold the newspaper and visited his home country, returning in 1892 (must be a misprint I think as he died in 1890!)
