It is said that Charles returned from Hong Kong, a wealthy man, in 1908. He chose to come overland across America and had to lie down in the train to avoid the bullets of attacking Indians. On arrival he purchased Friars Carse in Dumfrieshire which remained the family home until Fanny sold it to the Post Office (presumably as a retirement home) and moved to the Station Hotel where she lived for the rest of her life. It is now The Friars Carse Country Hotel, Auldgirth, Dumfries DG2 0SA.
