After Eton Gerald joined the Merchant Navy training ship, HMS Conway. He is said to have survived being wrecked in the Indian Ocean and devoted most of his life to managing and improving the 1,907 acre family estate at Whittingehame, East Lothian. His business interests included being chairman of a Glasgow based company selling bottled water from Loch Lomond and he was active in local government.
