Sir John's father was Daniel Chapman who was Headmaster of Free Grammar School in Leicestershire and his mother was Mary Timmes of Woodhouse, Leicestershire.
Sir John became MRCS on 2nd September 1803 and was knighted in 1823. He became FRCS in 1843 and was one of the original 300 Fellows of RCS. He practised in Windsor in partnership with Mr Turrill and attended the Court professionally. It is said that he attended King George III and IV.
