#8637, Hector Stewart VANDELEUR

(of Kilrush, County Clare, Ireland)

Hector's parents were Col. Crofton Moore Vandeleur and Lady Grace Graham-Toler, daughter of the second Earl of Norbury.  He was a brother to Elisabeth Frances Blacker-Douglass, Frances Letitia Vandeleur, John Toler Vandeleur, (his twin), Crofton Toler Vandeleur and John Ormsby Vandeleur.  The twins were baptised on 19th April 1836 at St George's Dublin.

From 1881 (until Kilrush House accidentally burned down in March 1897) he lived mainly in London and only spent short periods each year in Kilrush.  During the years 1886 to1890 which coincided with the period of the greatest number of evictions from the Vandeleur Estate he does not appear to have visited Kilrush.  In 1889 he bought Cahercon House ans then it was only a matter of time before the Vandeleurs moved to Cahercon as in 1896 they were holding shooting parties at Kilrush House and also at Cahercon.  In april 1901 Hector leased the shooting rites at Cahercon from James C R Scott for seven years for £5 and in October 1908 he again leased these rights for another seven years
