Robert and Jane had 6 children. Robert attended school in Etruria Hall run by Dr Manus. At age 13 he went to work for Josiah Wedgwood but we do not know for how long. He went on to learn the mining business and became the manager of the Clough Hall / Birchenwood colliery although he already owned another colliery at Seynd. In 1833 he selected Birchenwood as the site for the first forge mill to produce pig iron and the operation expanded rapidly. When he died in 1849 his 33year old son, also Robert took his place as manager at Clough Hall.
