Edward started work as an employee of Barclays Bank in Colchester. He was drafted into the Army and became a sergeant in the Royal Fusiliers. he was killed on the Somme in France on 17th February 1917 at the age of 29. He is buried in the Regina Trench Cemetery, Grandcourt and commemorated on his parents' gravestone and on the Lexden War Memorial.
