Educated a Westminster School 1749/50, he was a member of the Supreme Council of Bengal. Richard left India in March 1780. He had become one of the richest men in India selling salt and timber (apparently by fair means and foul!). On return to England his fortune stood at £400,000 with which he bought Stanstead House and Park for about £105,000 leaving plenty for its refurbishment.
