Captain Barwell was attached to the 1/3rd Gurkha Rifles at Barkai, Lower Bara Velley, when on the morning of 24th February 1898 he was shot dead by his servant. The servant was convicted of murder and hanged. The inscription on his grave at Peshawar reads 'In loving memory of Arthur Ross Barwell Captain 9th Gurkha Rifles only son of Captain W B Barwell late I.S.C. Born 30th July 1866 died 24th February 1898'
