The inclusion of the name 'Roddam' is of some significance. On 8th May (two months before he was born) there was a volcanic eruption on Martinique and the only ship out of 18 in the harbour to escape was the Roddam. The captain of the Roddam was Edward William Freeman, his first cousin once removed who subsequently left Henry Frederick Roddam £50 in his will dated 7th Oct 1948.
