#6930, Charles George Horatio SHORTING

Born 13 Dec 1840 in Stonham Aspall, Suffolk
Died 1897 in Stonham Aspall, Suffolk
Education Rugby, Balliol College, Oxford, Corpus Christi College, Oxford and New Inn Hall, Oxford.
Father Charles SHORTING (27 Nov 1810 - 26 Apr 1864)
Mother Elizabeth Harriet (Harriot) COBBOLD (1817 - 1910)

Educated at Rugby and Balliol College, Oxford, where he won a scholarships, matriculated 12th May 1859; was also a scholar at Corpus Christi College 1860-62; There followed an incident of child sexual abuse with a  chorister, Harry Goodman which resulted in the loss of his two scholarships.  He obtained a BA from New Inn Hall 1863.  Ironically, under a statute of 1881 New Inn Hall merged into Balliol in 1887.  Balliol acquired New Inn Hall's admissions and other records 1831-1887 as well as the library of New Inn Hall which largely contained 18th century law books.  It seems that Charles left the country after 1863 as he does not appear on any subsequent census records.  His younger brother Henry Francis went to America.
