John was the 2nd son.
John joined the Navy at the age of 13. Naval service took him to the West Indies where he saw at first hand the brutality of the slave trade. In 1791 he was engaged to organise a fleet to take freed slaves from Nova Scotia to Sierra Leone, where he later became Governor. Later in life he lived in Woodbridge. His grave is in St. Mary's churchyard and a blue plaque in Church Street commemorates him.
