Maria's father was Capt.J J (Standiver) Sherman of the 13th Madras Native Infantry, related to General Sherman of America. Maria appears in "US Sons of the American Revolution, membership applications 1889-1970" in Ancestry. The name Sherman is said to be derived from Sheepshearer. She had 10 children in all but 2, probably twins, Charles Henry and Francis Ord were born and died in 1874. 8 were still living in 1911
