Biography and Notes

Sir William was an eldest son. He became a member of the Slave Trade Commission in 1869; Governor of the Bahamas from 1874 to 1880; Governor of the Windward Islands 1881 to 1884; Governor of Barbados, 1885 and Trinidad in 1886. When Trinidad & Tobago was formed in 1889 he became the first Governor where he remained until appointed the 11th Governor of Hong Kong on 10th December 1891, a post he did not relinquish until 25th November 1898.

He had 3 sons and 3 daughters but it is not clear by whom.
