Herbert Jekyll won the Sword of Honour at Woolwich Acadamy and was commissioned into the Royal Engineers. Later he held a number of Private Secretaryships, was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1892 to 1895 and Secretary to the Board of Trade.
