OccupationA Bishop of the Church of England, a professor of poetry at Oxford University and author of one of the most influential textbooks of English grammar.

Biography and Notes

Educated at Winchester and New College, Oxford (1729), BA 1733; MA 1737. Ordained in 1735 he was appointed Vicar of Ovington, Hampshire, a position he retained until 1741, when he became professor of poetry at Oxford.
