Dr Preston was born whilst his parents were in Long Melford but almost immediately the family moved to Swaffham Prior in Cambridgeshire where his father held the living until his death. It seems he became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons the same year as he married Harriet Eliza Cane.
They probably went to New Zealand around 1881 but made frequent visits home. Their arrival on the "Aorangi" on 21st August 1890 marks their final return to New Zealand following the tragic death of an infant son that same year.
He was appointed to the Napier medical board under the Military Pensions Act in May 1889 but is said to have left the area (presumably due to declining health) by the same month one year later. He died of Pulmonary TB in Sumner, Christchurch on 12th February 1893 aged only 37.

Dr Alfred Chevallier Preston and his son Charles Arthur Chevallier Preston are buried in adjoining plots in Woolston Cemetery, New Zealand (270 and 271).
