Col. Richard served in the 60th Rifles which, from 1830 became the King's Royal Rifle Corps. By 1886 Lt. Col. Richard Walter Byrd Levett had taken his mothers name of Mirehouse and settled at the family's estate at Angle, Pembrokeshire. He was High Sheriff of the county in 1886.
After leaving the Regular Army Richard became the Commanding Officer of the 3rd Battalion, the Staffordshire Rifles, a Militia Regiment that was amalgamated in 1881 with other units to form the Staffordshire Regiment.
