of Dunmore House, Belfast. Sir John's parents were Alexander Preston (1780-22/7/1836) and Frances Running (1792-27/5/1817)

Sir John was a highly successful business man, knighted in 1878, founding John Preston & Co, flax and yarn merchants on Callender Street and later becoming a partner in Preston, Smyth & Co, linen, yarn and flax merchants. He originally (around 1843) lived on College Square East before moving to Dunmore House.
