2nd child and eldest son. Ottery St Mary School, Devon. Eton 1838, Cricket XI; Balliol College, Oxford 1849; Fellow of merton College, Oxford. Ordained in Exeter 1853; Curate at Alfrington, Devon; Bishop of Melanesia 1861. Died unmarried.
He was buried at sea but a grave prepared for him remains at the spot where he died. There is a large memorial cross to him in St Mary le Tower churchyard and another at the Ottery St. Mary junction on the A30 between Exeter and Honiton, Devon.
His will left his £12,000 fortune to the mission work to which his life had been devoted.
