Raewyn kept her head when all about her
Were losing theirs and blaming it on her,
She trusted herself when we all doubted,
But made allowance for our doubting too;
She couldn’t wait and was always tired by waiting,
Was rarely lied about, nor dealt in lies,
Was never hated, nor gave way to hating,
And always looked so good, and talked so wise:
Raewyn could dream – and not make dreams her master;
Raewyn could think – and not make thoughts her aim;
Raewyn met with Philip and Disaster
Treating those two imposters just the same;
Raewyn could talk with crowds and keep her virtue,
She walked with Kings – nor lost the common touch.
We never wanted anyone to hurt you,
For all folk count with you, but none too much;
We know you forced your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they were gone,
And so held on when there was nothing in you
Except the Will which said to you: ‘Hold on!’
We know you filled the unforgiving minute
With sixty-nine years’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And from us all resounds the last: Well Done!
