Martha was the last in a long line of the famous clockmaking family which came from Holland as refugees in the reign of Elizabeth I. Ahasueras Fromanteel was the first to construct a pendulum clock in England in 1685. As Master of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers, he was one of the earliest subscribers to the Bank of England.
