Clement was born and baptised at Aspall, his baptism taking place on 16 04 1871. He was educated at Lancing and Trinity College, Oxford where he took his BA in 1893. He went on to Ely Theological College in 1894 and was ordained Deacon in 1895 and Priest in York in 1896. His Curacy was at St. Olave, York, 1895-1898. Thereafter he served at All Saints, Middlesborough from 1898 to 1902 and was Vicar of Aspall, 1902 to 1906 and Redcar 1907 to 1908. Whilst in York he wrote and published a delightful little musical play entitled 'Daisies and Buttercups'.
