Stanley started his adult life as a missionary in China and later became Registrar of Hong Kong University. At outbreak of WWII (1940) he sent his family to Australia for safety, but he remained and was interned for the rest of the war by the Japanese. Joined them after the war in 1946, only to be run down by a tram.
