Mother Theodosia Harriet WRIGHT (1830 - 1896)

Theodosia learned her nursing at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford. She reached the grade of Sister and is seen to have been a 'Lady Nurse' in the Isle of Wight on the 1891 Census. She married firstly in Toronto in 1896 before joining Princess Christian's Army Nursing Service (Reserve) on 16th January, 1900. The Trust acquired her Boer War unmarked silver Princess Christian's Army Nursing Service Reserve badge in May 2019. She served at the Imperial Yeomanry Hospital in Pretoria.  She was the great granddaughter of Lord Chief Justice Denman and re-married after Charles had been killed at loos and became Mrs Henry Martley Vandeleur of Kings Mill House, South Nutfield, Surrey.  She appears to have received a mention in despatches for her work at the Portman Hospital for Officers in London, in late 1918 according to the 'Nursing Times' of 24th August 1918.

In July 2024 the Trust bought at auction Nursing Sister T A Cobbold's Queen's South Africa 1899-1902 medal described as 3rd type reverse, no clasp, with reverse pin for wear.  The medal and badge are now reunited in our care.
