Dorothea was the daughter of John Freston of Sibton Abbey in Yoxford, Suffolk, 1732-1797 and Dorothy Howman (1744-1797). He had changed his name to Scrivener on inheritance. Dorothea brought to the marriage a large income of £1,700 per year from the Scrivener estates in Suffolk. John and Dorothea had three children, one of whom, Edward died unmarried.
