William entered the Middle Temple in 1632. He was abroad for much of the Civil War and appears to have been estranged from his father. Nevertheless he inherited the Newnham estate around 1654. 1660 was an important year for him. He was elected MP for Plympton Erle in the Convention Parliament. In July he was appointed a JP and in August he became a commissioner for assessment. Later in November he proposed a message congratulating the Queen Mother on her return from France and was knighted on 5th December.
He was re-elected to the Cavalier Parliament in 1661 and served as MP for Plympton Erle until his death in 1676. From around 1663/3 he served as commissioner for corporations and as recorder of Plympton Erle from 1663. In 1675 hr held the post of commissioner for recusants in Devon.
