Sampson was appointed rector of Dittisham (pronounced 'Ditsum') in 1583 and of Little Hempston, both in the county of Devon in 1589
He married Joan Edgcumbe, daughter of John Edgcumbe of Leigh in Ugborough, Devon
He is mentioned in the will of his brother, William dated 17th August 1603. Administration on his own will dated 16th December 1628 was granted on 3rd October 1638 in Exeter.
